J. Walter Cameron Center Energy Initiative:

Energy Efficient Lighting: Energy Industries LLC implemented an energy-efficient lighting retrofit at the Cameron Center to reduce energy consumption while improving light quality. For the lighting efficiency program, a total of 396T12 fixtures and magnetic ballasts were retrofitted with 28-watt super T8lamps and high-efficiency electronic ballasts. Energy Industries also replaced 16 exit signs with new LED ones. As a result, the Cameron Center reduced its electricity usage by 34,000 kWh, a savings of $8,500 (at 25¢/kWh) a year.

Energy Efficient Mechanical Equipment: as electricity rates continued to rise, the Cameron Center implemented an evenlarger energy-efficiency project at the Center. The scope ofwork included:

  • Installing a Smardt 125-ton air-cooled chiller
  • Rebalancing the air handling units
  • Converting to variable primary chilled water flow

 The Smardt air-cooled chiller is extremely energy efficient, incorporating variable frequency drives and an oil-free Turbocor™ compressor, which utilizes magnetic bearing technology.

The new chiller significantly improvedthe capacity and reliability of the facility’sair conditioning system, which previouslyhad been unsuccessful at sufficiently cooling the building. The newchiller also reduced the recurring operationand maintenance costs for theCameron Center. In addition, the quietoperation of the new compressors wasgreatly appreciated by the resident agencies ofthe facility.

Case Study in Energy Efficiency Mechanical Equipment — Energy & Cost Savings

Prior to the energy implementation the Cameron Center had consumed an average of 55, 000 kWh and 60,000 kWh per month, respectively. After completing its mechanical equipment energy-efficiency project, the facility’s consumption was reduced to an average of 46,000 kWh per month. This represents an annual kWh savings of 166,000 kWh. Assuming an average electricity price of 25¢ per kWh, the Cameron Center saves $3,500 a month or $42,000 a year on its electric bills.

Our efforts paid-off and all the energy efficiency projects combined reduced Cameron Center energy consumption by twenty five percent.

Environmental Impact: In addition to enjoying financial benefits, the Cameron Center has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, a valuable contribution to the community:

J. Walter Cameron Center concluded with over two million dollars in projects with the support of the County of Maui Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), USDA, Weinberg Foundation and the County of Maui on its first phase of rehabilitating the facilities. “Our mission is to help agencies that assist people with special needs and helping to maintain our facilities is a key part of carrying out that mission,” said Cameron Center Board Chair Greg Chou.

Commenting on the project, César Gaxiola agreed saying, “The rehabilitation activities that were undertaken by the Cameron Center are critical to ensuring the health and safety of the many facility users.”

Specifically, the rehabilitation activities have included:

  • Remodeling of ten restrooms. Relocation and extension of existing walls for ADA compliance; replacement of twelve toilets for new water saving toilets and two sinks for ADA compliance and energy efficiency; removal and upgraded all inside plumbing;
  • Refurbished 9,500 sq ft of interior ceilings;
  • Accomplished fire safety/electrical system improvements for energy efficiency; and
  • Remodeling of three kitchens including: hood, stove, microwaves, and refrigerators; Installation of cabinets, dishwasher, trash disposal and a sink for ADA compliance and energy efficiency; removal and upgraded interior plumbing and electrical
  • Replacement of fur air handler units to new electronic systems, air vents, and air ducts and re-design access panels for easy access to long term maintenance and update of air systems.
  • Replacement of 38 windows to double pane and tinted glass for energy efficiency and safety.
  • Replacement of all vinyl tile, baseboards and interior painting.
  • Paving of its lower parking lot.
